Milnthorpe Steel Band

Milnthorpe, unusually, has two steel bands: the Milnthorpe County Primary School Steel Band and the Milnthorpe Community Steel Band, also known as “Din On A Bin.”

Both bands have been in existence since the latter months of 1998, following the purchase of “half” a steel band by the primary school. This followed a visit by a school band from Manchester.

The school band was introduced as a way of enhancing musical opportunities within the school and increasing the public profile of the school in the larger community. As the band has become more experienced they have been successful in local festivals such as The Mary Wakefield Festival and nationally, in the National Festival of Music for Youth in London.

The Community Steel Band was formed at the same time as a way of interested individuals outside the school having a previously unheard of opportunity to perform in a steel band. We have members who are parents of current and ex pupils at the school and members who are unrelated to the school. There are also pupils who have left the school but wish to continue playing in a band.
